What to do with used coffee grounds: 11 uses that actually work

A kilo of coffee produces a genuinely surprising amount of spent grounds, and pretty much all of it goes in the bin. It is the single largest waste stream in home coffee drinking, and there is a whole ecosystem of advice online about what to do with it instead.

A fair chunk of that advice is wrong. It gets repeated because it sounds plausible and nobody checks. So this list is split honestly: what works, and what to stop bothering with.

The ones that work

Compost. This is the best use by a distance. Spent grounds are a nitrogen-rich green material with a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio around 20:1, which makes them close to ideal heap food. They break down quickly, they help a heap heat up, and the fine texture holds moisture well.

The rule is proportion. Keep them under roughly a fifth of the heap by volume and balance them with browns — cardboard, dry leaves, shredded paper, egg boxes. Tip a bucket of nothing but grounds into a bin and it will compact into a dense, sour, airless mat that takes months to do anything.

Paper filters go in with them. They are compostable and they count as a brown, which conveniently offsets the grounds themselves.

Worm bins. Worms are genuinely enthusiastic about coffee grounds, and the slight grit appears to help their digestion. Same rule as compost: a component, not the whole diet. A wormery fed exclusively on coffee will go acidic and the population will crash.

Scouring. Spent grounds are mildly abrasive and hold onto oil, which makes them good for scrubbing a pan without scratching it. Particularly good on cast iron, where you want to shift residue without stripping the seasoning. Not for anything with a delicate coating.

Getting smells off your hands. Garlic, onion, fish. Rub damp grounds between your hands, rinse. It works better than soap does, because the oils in the grounds pick up the sulphur compounds that soap alone leaves behind. This is the one that converts people.

Absorbing odours. Dry the grounds thoroughly first — spread on a tray for a day, or they will simply grow mould and become a worse problem than the smell. Then put them in an open container in the fridge, the freezer, a gym bag, a car. They work on much the same principle as bicarbonate of soda and they smell considerably better while doing it.

Fireplaces. Scatter damp grounds over cold ash before you clear it. The moisture weighs the ash down so it does not billow up into the room. A very old trick and a genuinely good one.

Growing mushrooms. Spent grounds are pasteurised by the brewing itself and are an excellent substrate for oyster mushrooms. It requires a kit and some care about contamination, so it is not a five-minute job — but it is the only use on this list that turns waste coffee into food, and it works remarkably well.

Digging into soil. This works, with two conditions: compost them first if you can, and if you cannot, spread thinly and rake them in rather than layering them on top. Grounds improve structure and water retention in the way most fine organic matter does.

The ones that do not

Slugs. This is the big one, and it is everywhere. It traces back to a study that used a caffeine solution — not spent grounds — at a concentration far above anything a used filter contains. Garden trials have consistently failed to reproduce the effect with actual grounds. If slugs are eating your plants, use something that has been tested for it. Coffee grounds are a ring of brown mulch that slugs will crawl straight over.

Acidifying soil. Also everywhere, also wrong. Used grounds sit at roughly pH 6.5 to 6.8 — essentially neutral. The acidity that was in the coffee went into the cup, which is rather the point of brewing. To move the pH of a bed meaningfully you would need a volume of grounds you are never going to produce, and you would wreck the soil structure getting there. If you want to grow blueberries, buy ericaceous compost.

Using them as fertiliser on their own. Grounds do contain nitrogen, but it is locked up in organic compounds that soil microbes have to break down before a plant can use any of it. In the short term, that decomposition can actually pull available nitrogen out of the soil. Composted first, they are a genuine soil improver. Straight from the filter onto a bed, they are just a crust that repels water.

Down the sink. Not a use at all, but worth saying. Grounds bind with fat and grease and are a well-documented cause of blocked drains. The idea that they clean or freshen a plughole is exactly backwards.

If you have no garden

Food waste collection. Most UK councils take coffee grounds and paper filters in kerbside food waste, which goes to industrial composting or anaerobic digestion. It takes no effort, and it keeps the material out of landfill where it would break down anaerobically and produce methane.

One thing about pods

None of this applies to coffee pods, and it is worth being blunt about why.

A pod is a few grams of coffee sealed inside plastic or aluminium. Even the recyclable ones need separating, rinsing and putting through a specific stream that many councils do not run. The grounds inside are compostable; the packaging around them is the problem, and it is a large problem relative to the amount of coffee involved.

Whole bean coffee produces grounds and a bag. That is the whole waste stream, and everything on this page applies to it. It is one of the quieter arguments for buying whole bean that has nothing to do with how it tastes.

Common questions

Are used coffee grounds good for plants?

Composted, yes — they are a useful nitrogen-rich green material. Applied straight to soil in a thick layer, no: they compact into a water-repellent crust that does more harm than good. Compost them first, or spread them very thinly and rake them in.

Are coffee grounds acidic?

Used grounds are close to neutral, around pH 6.5 to 6.8. Most of the acidity ends up in your cup, not in the grounds. This is why the common advice to feed them to blueberries and other acid-lovers does not really work — they are not nearly acidic enough to shift your soil.

Do coffee grounds deter slugs?

Not reliably. The idea comes from a study using strong caffeine solution, not spent grounds, and garden trials have largely failed to reproduce it. If slugs are the problem, use something that is actually tested.

Can you put coffee grounds down the sink?

No. They clump with fats and grease and are a well-known cause of blocked drains. Bin them, compost them or use them — but keep them out of the plughole.
